There may come a time when you must undergo a complex dental procedure. Maybe you need oral surgery, or you are having dental implants placed, and the appointment will be longer than a regular dental cleaning.

But what if you suffer from dental anxiety and are nervous about an upcoming appointment. You may have a sensitive gag reflex that makes it difficult for the dentist to care for your teeth. Whatever the reason, you may be a good candidate for sedation dentistry.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

There are several different forms of sedation dentistry. At Smile Station Family Dentistry, we offer expertise in the following types of sedation:

  • Nitrous oxide — Also known as “laughing gas,” this type of sedation is administer through a breathing mask, to help you relax and allow the dentist to take care of your dental needs. You can talk to the dentist during your procedure, and you’ll feel fine by the end of your appointment.
  • Oral conscious (pill) sedation — If this type of sedation is prescribed, the dentist will ask you to take a pill about one hour before your appointment. Although you may not remember your entire dental appointment, you will be awake and able to answer questions and interact with the dentist.
  • IV sedation — When given sedation through an IV, you will be semi-conscious. You can still communicate with your dental team, but many people don't remember much of what happened during their appointment. If you have extreme dental anxiety or a lengthy dental procedure ahead of you, IV sedation may be your best bet.

What Makes Sedation Dentistry Your Best Choice?

If you are apprehensive about using sedation dentistry for your next appointment, you should consider it for the following reasons:

  • Sedation dentistry will relieve any pain or discomfort you may experience.
  • Sedation dentistry will relax you and keep you from feeling anxious. You may not remember the appointment, which can also help with anxiety.
  • Sedation dentistry will keep your gag reflex from interrupting your procedure.
  • Sedation dentistry will make your dental appointment go more quickly and could reduce the number of visits you make to the dentist.
