Tooth-Colored Fillings in Paducah, KY

In years past, the best way to treat a cavity was by using silver amalgam fillings. However, over time, we discovered these fillings could leave gray lines and marks on teeth, expand and contract due to temperature changes, and contain trace amounts of mercury.

Though the American Dental Association states silver amalgam is safe for fillings, our team at Smile Station prefers the aesthetics and conservative approach tooth-colored fillings offer. Tooth-colored fillings are a modern restorative treatment to repair tooth decay without detracting from your smile’s aesthetics. With tooth-colored fillings, we match the shade of the composite resin with your tooth, so it blends in seamlessly.

What Is a Tooth-Colored Filling?

A tooth-colored filling, also called a composite filling, uses composite resin to repair tooth decay and minor chips and cracks in teeth. They’re durable and provide good resistance to fracture in small- to mid-sized fillings that withstand the pressure from chewing forces. Dentists use tooth-colored fillings on front and back teeth, providing a more natural look than silver amalgam fillings.

The Procedure for a Tooth-Colored Filling

First, the dentist discusses your options and helps you choose the best filling type for your needs. We also help you select the shade of composite that matches your tooth, so the restoration looks as natural as possible.

We administer a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and carefully remove the decay. Composite resin fillings don’t require the removal of as much healthy tooth structure as silver fillings. So, placing a tooth-colored filling preserves a sound and strong tooth structure. Once the tooth is cleaned and disinfected, we dry it to prepare it for the filling placement. Next, we shape the resin, applying it in layers to create a stable and durable restoration.

Using a curing light, we harden the composite and check your bite to ensure the restoration is comfortable. Finally, we contour and polish the filled tooth, and you’re ready to show off your smile!

After the Procedure

We usually advise patients to avoid eating and drinking for two to three hours after receiving a filling. Some patients experience slight sensitivity for a few days after the procedure, which is normal. If the filling doesn’t feel like it fits in with your bite or if you have pain in the tooth, please get in touch with us so we can correct the issue.
