Are there any side effects of sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is safe for patients and typically has minimal to no side effects. Like anything else, there are exceptions where a patient may experience side effects with dental sedation that are generally temporary and mild, such as drowsiness, nausea, dry mouth, or dizziness.

Sedation Dentistry in Paducah, KY

At Smile Station Family Dentistry, we offer two levels of dental sedation to meet your needs: nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas) and oral sedation.

Nitrous Oxide

This is the lightest level of sedation that helps fearful patients alleviate anxiety during most dental procedures. It's safe for adults and children and typically doesn't leave you with lingering side effects.

The effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly when the inhalation mask is removed, and it's safe for adults to drive home and continue their everyday activities.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation offers a deeper level of relaxation, helping patients settle in almost as if they were sleeping, yet they remain responsive. The amnesic effect of the medication ensures you have little to no memory of your dental treatment.

With this level of sedation, you'll need to arrange transportation to and from your dental appointment. You should also plan to take the day off and rest for the remainder of the day after your treatment.
