What is considered a dental emergency?

According to our emergency dentist in Paducah, KY, a dental emergency is any oral issue that causes you pain or poses a threat to your oral health.

Common dental emergencies may include:

  • Toothache or a sensitive tooth
  • Jaw swelling, redness, and pain
  • Broken tooth or restoration
  • Tooth or jaw trauma
  • Object stuck in teeth or soft oral tissue

While these are the most common dental emergencies, root infection is probably number one.

A root infection means you need treatment in our dental office. Our dentist numbs the treatment area, clears away the deep root infection from your tooth, and fills it with a healing agent and temporary cap.

We typically provide a tooth crown to stabilize the tooth and restore your bite at a later visit. This treatment is called a root canal.

In some situations, you may be unsure whether your oral problem is an emergency or whether it can wait. In this case, we encourage you to call our dental office for further instructions.
